Commonly, art is understood as being primarily of aesthetic value. People ignore the potential for art to tell stories or inform its audience on cultural and social topics.
Indigenous artist Liz (Belanjee) Cameron thinks differently. In a 2015 paper, Liz said “Australian Aboriginal symbols are visual forms of knowledge.” To her, Aboriginal art is not a commercial or aesthetic practice but a process of teaching and learning. By engaging with artworks, individuals gain insight.
